Cows! We've got 'em

One of the advantages of living out east is that many of our neighbors are cows. There's something comforting about having the peaceful bovines nearby. Their sweet little calves are the picture of carefree joy. Most of the cattle we see in fields between neighborhoods are part of ranches that run cow/calf operations. This means the calves are rased until their a few months old, then they are rounded up and sent up north to fatten up. It's actually cheaper to take the calves to where the food is, than it is to import grain.

Dairy farms are diminshing in the state. we're fortunate to have a a nice one in our community. Dakin Dairy is a family-run operation in Myakka. They take great care of the cows and they produce fine milk. There are tours daily during season. Here you can get up close to the milk mavens. You will also realize why they don't give tours in the hot, humid months of summer!
