The Mother Teresa Project,
a celebration and commemoration of the legacy of the iconic Mother Teresa, will soon be rolled out internationally following the unveiling of Frederick R. Laverne’s Mother Teresa portrait entitled “Divine Inspiration” at Georgetown University, according to Birgit Von Schondorf, Director of The Mother Teresa Project.

Announcing the project at Georgetown University

The project — a blend of art, commerce, education and philanthropy — will be taken on tour and displayed at various locations around the U.S. over the next two years. The unveiling at Georgetown University was done in April in collaboration with the Embassy of India and the Department of Indian Studies at Georgetown.
New Jersey, South Carolina and Louisiana are expected to be among the first venues of the tour. Eventually the painting will be displayed in India, where U.S. and Indian government officials already have extended such an invitation.
“Mother Teresa is a positive force in this very troubled world, and in her selfless work she personified all of the qualities that should guide all people, but especially younger generations around the world: love, compassion, and empathy for people who struggle to survive and maintain a sense of self-dignity,” Ms. Von Schondorf said. “Everyone, regardless of ethnic origin or religious beliefs, can benefit from the positive force that Mother Teresa represents, perhaps even more today than when she was performing her works of charity.”

Since the unveiling, Ms. Von Schondorf and The Mother Teresa Project have been setting up the infrastructure to support a multiyear effort to celebrate Mother Teresa’s charitable work, including educational and philanthropic initiatives. “Mother Teresa touched me personally, and the people who asked me to head up this project had absolutely no idea at the time,” Ms Von Schondorf said. “For me, taking on this project is paying a debt of gratitude to a remarkable woman who, in a very real sense, watched over me and understood how all people should strive to live their lives.”
Mr. Laverne, a U.S. Navy Medal of Honor winner, was inspired to paint his now famous painting when he was suffering from cancer.
