Traveling is exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. Especially during the holidays. Airports are packed. Lines are long. People look like they want to kill themselves and the family they are traveling with. Most of us are already stressing over other things like staying on our health regiment and traveling sometimes makes that more of an issue. How can we beat this? I recently traveled and it dawned on me how hard it is to eat healthy when you're in the airport. I mean , yes, we all cheat while we're on vacation but if your like me and have a food allergy (gluten is mine) then cheating is OUT OF THE QUESTION or you can consider your vacation ruined! So, whether I'm traveling or not, I HAVE to stay on track. These are some ways I suggest you do that with me.
Bring some healthy snacks
Plan ahead: Before you leave for your vacation, research the area you're heading to so you don't find yourself settling for quick and unhealthy choices. Find options that best suit your dietary needs or simply offer what your heart desires while you're there. Allow yourself enough time to sit down and enjoy your meal and not be rushed through it.
Pack healthy snacks: Airport security has gotten tight, and I'm ok with that, which means no liquids BUT we can still bring our healthy "grab and go" snacks for the transition part of our journey. Mine are always Larabars!!! YUM! Larabars not your thing, think apple, carrot sticks, granola bar, cheddar bunnies or some good ole pirate booty. Try it, you'll love it and it might come in handy for that annoying child on the plane :-)
Make good choices: Did you let time get away from you? Waited til an hour before you had to leave to pack for you and your family? Don't fret, when you get to the airport, make good choices. Most airports are offering more and more healthy options, your job is to choose them over the high fat processed foods. Choose fruits, nuts, water or herbal teas. I promise you, if you stick to this plan, you'll enjoy your vacation even more.
I got really lucky on my last leg in and out of JFK. It dawned on me that it had been a while since I had flown in and out of JFK even though I visit NYC often, silly me. I was pleasantly surprised when I got off my flight , turned the corner at Terminal 5 home of JetBlue and saw what appeared to be a very lively dining area. We're talking linen napkins, stemware and even a hostess with the mostess. I was so excited that I delayed my exit to check this all out. I know, I'm an idiot. I chose to stop at AeroNuova. The menu was incredible. So much so that I couldn't make a decision on what to get. I ordered the citrus fennel and watercress salad with grilled chicken. The rest of the family had spinach and ricotta pizza, penne a la vodka, arugula salad and calamari. Everyone was very pleased with our choices. I was mostly delighted with the fact that I didn't have to settle for fried foods or foods loaded with refined sugars. This makes me smile and was a great start to my vacation.
Vacations are about enjoying ourselves, so let’s...shall we...
